My Mirror

The human mind is fascinating; it strives to keep its owner safe. But some of the ways our brain might keep us safe entails throwing others under the bus. Sigmund Freud coined the term "defense mechanism" one form of which is "projection."

"Projection, the mental process by which people attribute to others what is in their own minds."

Britannica

In other words... you spot it, you got it. Unlike many of my other poems, there wasn't a particular story I can share with you to describe what inspired My Mirror. I was just reflecting on relationships and some of the baggage that can sometimes get in the way. It reminds me of the song, Man in the Mirror. sung by Michael Jackson.

"I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways. And no message could've been any clearer. If they wanna make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make a change."

Glen Ballard / Siedah Garrett

When we can see others as just like us, even part of us, and their foibles as our own, I think the world would be a more harmonious place. This simple practice has brought more love into my relationships and made my life sweeter and sweeter.
